A premium gin from Citadelle, this is a fabulous gin from Southwest France, just minutes from the town of Cognac,
Château de Bonbonnet is the home of Citadelle Gin, featuring its distillery, juniper fields, and orangery made with 19 different botanicals including Moroccan Coriander, French Juniper, Mexican Orange Peel and Chinese Liquorice.
Distilled in Cognac pot stills over a naked flame, making it the only gin that uses this technique. Distilling gin on an open flame requires a deft touch and far more attention than a column still or steam distillation which is otherwise used. The naked flame concentrates flavors and releases more essential oils, giving Citadelle a creamier texture and bigger mouthful.
The recipe for Citadelle Gin was developed by a distillery in Dunkirk in 1771. Dunkirk was one of the first ports of call in Europe for many explorers sailing back from the Orient, whose ships were laden with exotic herbs and spices.
1775 Distillerie Royale pays tribute to Alexandre Gabriel’s years of research in dusty 18th century archives which brought to light that the first patented French genièvrerie was established in 1775 by decree of King Louis XVI.
Forgotten for hundreds of years, Gabriel’s exploration uncovered Citadelle’s original recipe. Citadelle Gin is made according to principles laid down in the original recipe.
Although the production techniques have improved over the centuries, the same 19 botanicals listed in the original recipe are still used, and it is the only gin infused with this combination of botanicals, which enhance the juniper and create one of the most sophisticated, juniper-forward London dry gins available today.
