Glenmorangie The Lasanta 70cl 46%

The Glenmorangie "Lasanta" is transferred from its original bourbon cask to be extra matured or "finished" in top grade Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks. In Gaelic "Lasanta" means warmth and passion. It is a tantalising marriage of warm, creamy and nutty flavours. Importantly, The Lasanta is non chill-filtered and bottled at a strength of 46%. This imparts added body, taste and texture to the spirit.

More about Glenmorangie Lasantra: Named from the Glen of the Morangie Burn, ‘glen of great tranquillity’ in Gaelic, it’s just what you expect at the bottom of a slope on the wind-swept coastline of Dornoch Firth. The distillery climbs the slope above the warehouses at the water’s edge. Situated north of Inverness in the North East Highlands close to the Royal Burgh of Tain, one of Scotland’s oldest towns and long a place of pilgrimage, documents suggesting production of whisky from the old Morangie farmhouse goes back at least 250 years.

In 1996 cooperage, storage, blending, bottling, administration, marketing and other functions were moved to headquarters near Edinburgh airport. Left at the distillery are a visitor centre and 16 employees, the ’Sixteen men of Tain’, mentioned on the labels of the wood finish bottlings distilling 120 casks of whisky a day. Glenmorangie was one of the first distilleries with the innovation of steam-heated stills, eliminating the bottom of the wash to burn. The stills are the tallest found in the Highlands, a design used in the 1880's for gin that result in a light and elegant spirit. As a best-selling single malt only a small part of production is used for blends and practically none is bottled by independent bottlers. In 1996 a range with sherry, port and madeira finishes complemented the original bourbon aged range.

Lasantra Producer's Tasting Notes; Aroma: Like the most delicious dessert menu imaginable, Lasanta taunts the senses with chocolate covered raisins, honeycomb and smooth caramel toffee. Citrus notes clear the way for the crispy burnt sugar and melting softness of crème brulee to be replaced by the rich aroma of rum and raisin ice cream

The addition of water to Lasanta exposes another menu of juicy dates and caramelised apricots whose sweetness is offset with hazelnut and walnut oil. Notes of dessert sherry wine emerge, mixed with spice and linseed oil to give a sense of cosiness and age-old comfort

Taste: The full, sweet flavour typical of Spanish sherry with sultanas, orange segments, walnuts and butter toffee. The bite of hazelnut tasted through a chocolate coating, spice notes and hints of leather add the overwhelming sense of richness

Finish: Satisfyingly long with spiced orange and chocolate enrobed hazelnuts
