Seggiano Chocolate Panforte It is said that the nuns of a medieval convent near Siena originally invented panforte in honour of a visiting pope, who received it well and commended the recipe. Once made and sold by apothecaries, the spice merchants of medieval Italy, it has now become a famous local speciality of Tuscany, and in particular Siena. The ingredients are heated to a boiling paste, before adding freshly toasted almonds, flour and cooling the paste enough to hand shape into the traditional flat round shape.
